1ST RMLNLU NATIONAL MEDIATION COMPETITION


The 1st RMLNLU National Mediation Competition was held from 13th January – 15th January, 2012. This was the first of a kind event in the whole if Asia. The occasion was graced by international legal luminaries with the likes of Professor Martin Price, Fullbright scholar and mediation expert, Mr.Niranjan Bhatt, Ms. Sadhana Ramachandran, Mr. J.P. Sengh, Mr.I.B.Singh and more than 20 judges of the Delhi High Court and more than 10 judges from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. 22 teams from all various colleges like NLIU-Bhopal, NLU-Orissa, NLU-Delhi, HNLU, GNLU, NUJS, CLC-Delhi, SASTRA took part in the event.

On 13th January, 2012 a workshop was conducted for the participants in which Prof. Martin Price, Ms. Sadhana Ramachandran and the judges spoke about mediation being the most effective way to address disputes of personal , contractual and commercial relationships by providing an out of the box solution. A mock mediation was also conducted for the participants to enable them to have a better understanding of what the Competition was all about.

On 14th January, 2012 the event was formally inaugurated. The two preliminary rounds took place after the Judges’ High tea and their briefing. Later on in the evening, the quarter finals took place. SVKM’s Pravin Gandhi, Campus Law Centre-Delhi University, SASTRA University and National Law University-Orissa proceeded to the semi finals.

On 15th January, 2012 the semi finals and the finals took place. Campus Law Centre-Delhi UniversitySASTRA University made it to the finals. The finals were judged by Mr. Niranjan Bhatt, Mr. J.P.Sengh, Ms. Sadhana Ramachandran, Mr. Martin Price and Mr. I.B.Singh. Campus Law Centre-Delhi University won the 1st RMLNLU National Mediation Competition. They were represented by Ms. Anushree Bardhan and Ms. Richa Tyagi who was also adjudicated to be the BEST MEDIATOR. The Competition was a great success and the efforts of the Legal Aid Committee Convenor Anas Tanwir, the Organizing Committee members Tahreem Khan, Yasharth Srivastava, Sanjana RamachandranSonalshivani Sinha, Rashi, Pankaj Kumar, Yasir Abbas, Deepshikha SharmaAvni Jain, Riya Ghosh, Piyushraj Verma, Varnika Jain, Arpit Goel, Akansha Tiwari, Shuchi Singh and other members and volunteers paid off. The judges, participants and other dignitaries reiterated throughout the Competition that mediation is not a tool for reducing the burden of the Court but it is the best way for dispute settlement.
